Frances Tiafoe v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

Tiafoe and Travaglia met at this year’s Australian Open first round in their only meeting before this. Big Foe won the match in straight sets.

Tiafoe is 6-6 for the Season

Frances Tiafoe’s record for the season conceals the battling qualities he has shown on the court. Score lines such as 6-4 or 7-6 in deciding sets, have tilted what ought to have been an encouraging start to a modest first quarter.

Only two of his six defeats have been in straight sets, both of them coming on the South American Golden Swing where he made a very short stint. Clay is naturally not his forte despite capturing the Parma Challenger last year on the dirt.

But on the bright side, he ended his drought for a tour level win on clay when he beat Facundo Bagnis in Buenos Aires. His last victory had come nearly two years ago at the Madrid Masters.

Tiafoe’s best showing this year came in his first tournament of 2021 where he made the quarterfinals in Delray. At the Australian Open, he was a tough nut to crack for two and half sets in his second round match against Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion.

While the American has played solidly this year, there is a sense of uneasiness that seems to engulf his game as he continues to throw away very close matches.

Will a return to home soil spark a winning spree for the 2019 Miami Open quarterfinalist?

Travaglia Winless Since Melbourne

The wins have dried up for Stefano Travaglia since his remarkable run to the final of the Great Ocean Road Open. Travaglia overcame a barrage of power hitters to book his spot in an all-Italian championship match.

The week-long event in the build-up to the Australian Open was Travaglia’s finest, and he was denied ultimate glory by fellow countryman Jannik Sinner who handled the occasion and the opponent with supreme tennis.

It was the 29-year-old’s first final at tour level, and it happened almost 10 years on from a career-threating accident in 2011, in which he underwent surgery for multiple arm injuries.

His form has been intermittent since Melbourne, where upon losing in the first round the Australian Open, he has found victories hard to come by. He was beaten by Mackenzie McDonald in Marseille, and Fabio Fognini got the better of him in Acapulco last week.

Interestingly, he hasn’t even won a set in each of his last four defeats. It is certainly not too late for the man from Ascoli Piceno to push the reset down at the first Masters 1000 tournament of the year.

Tiafoe v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

Travaglia is an unforced-error machine and his confidence has been shuttered. Tiafoe is not in great form either, but it would be unwise not to pick the American to win here quite comfortably.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
