Heather Watson v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

Both the previous two matches between these two players have gone in favour of Watson, who first defeated Stojanovic in the first round of the 2017 Monterrey Open and then managed a straight-set win against the Serb in the qualifiers of the 2020 Hobart International.

Watson Makes an Underwhelming Start

Watson is 2-4 on win-loss this season, spread across four tournaments and while three of those defeats have come to players ranked and playing better than her, she would know she needs a solid turnaround for her year.

It started with a second round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open where Watson went down to Ekaterina Alexandrova and followed that up with a first round loss to Veronika Kudermetova at the Grampians Trophy at the Australian Open.

At the Australian Open, Watson managed to eke out a first round win over Kristyna Pliskova in two tie-breakers but things haven’t gotten too much better for her since then. A defeat at the hands of Anett Kontaveit in the second round there would have hurt since she had her chances but more importantly, losing to fellow Brit Harriet Dart relegated her to her fourth defeat of 2021.

Can she now look to get her season back on track as she looks to get past round one in Miami, something she hasn’t done since the 2017 edition.

Stojanovic Steady After Horrible 2020

It was a forgettable 2020 for Stojanovic who did not win a single main draw match on the WTA circuit all season, with a quarterfinal appearance in one of the tournaments on the ITF circuit becoming her best performance of the year.

Since returning from the pandemic break, Stojanovic featured in five tournaments, including two on the ITF circuit and lost in the first round of four of them, while not qualifying for the fifth.

Which is why the start to this season has been steady for Stojanovic. She would be pleased, for instance, with wins over Mayar Sherif and Irina Begu at the Yarra Valley Classic and Australian Open for instance. Similarly a 6-4, 6-0 drubbing of Sorana Cirstea in Lyon would have helped.

As would a shock win over Martina Trevisan in Monterrey where she then lost to Anna Kalinskaya.

She enters this tournament on the back of a couple of qualifying wins and given her opponent’s struggles in recent times, could make it really difficult for her.

Watson v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip

On paper, Watson is a favourite at 4/5 but expecting Stojanovic to make it very difficult for her. Backing Stojanovic to nick this encounter.

Tip: Stojanovic to win: 1/1 (bet365)
