Seven-time WTA winner, Caroline Garcia will make a seventh main draw appearance at the Miami Open this year.

The former World No. 4, currently ranked 51st in the world, comes into the tournament with a 6-6 record.

Having ended 2020 with an 11-11 record, Garcia kickstarted the 2021 season with two wins in a row at the Gippsland Trophy, before falling to Elise Mertens in the Round of 16.

At the Australian Open, Garcia got her third win of the year, when she defeated Slovenia’s Polona Hercog in the first round, before falling to eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the next.

The Round-of-64 defeat was followed by first-round exits at the Phillip Island Trophy and Adelaide International, as the 27-year-old went down to Japan’s Miaski Doi and Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova respectively.

Garcia ended the three-match losing streak with a three-set win over Oceane Dodin in Lyon before being stunned by Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in the Round of 16.

In Dubai, the 10-time WTA finalist rallied from a set down to oust Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the first round and then knocked out Italy’s Martina Trevisan in straight sets before going down to Mertens in the Round of 16.

At the Miami Open, the 2017 French Open quarterfinalist reached the fourth round for the first time in 2019. Playing as the 19th seed, Garcia ousted Victoria Azarenka and Julia Gorges en route to the Round of 16, where she was beaten by Petra Kvitova.

Buzarnescu Knocks Out Monterrey Champion

On Wednesday, Garcia will face Romanian qualifier Mihaela Buzarnescu, who knocked out last week’s Monterrey Open champion Leylah Fernandez with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the first qualifying round and then rallied from a set down to defeat Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 on Tuesday to secure a spot in the main draw.

The 32-year-old Romanian is 1-5 in main draws this year.

Having entered the main draw of the Australian Open as a lucky loser (she lost her last round of qualifying to America’s Whitney Osuigwe), the lefty made a first round exit after losing to Bianca Andreescu in three.

The World No. 137 also lost in the first rounds of the Gippsland Trophy, falling to Daria Kasatkina in straight sets, and the Phillip Island Trophy, losing to Jil Tiechmann even after taking a one-set-to-love lead.

A similar pattern followed in Lyon, as Buzarnescu took the first set against Kristina Mladenovic, but failed to close out the contest, falling to the Frenchwoman in the first round.

In Guadalajara, she finally got her first main draw win of the season, beating CoCo Vandeweghe, but fell to Marie Bouzkova in the next round.

The Romanian, who reached the fourth round of the French Open in 2018, is a three-time WTA finalist, winning the title in San Jose in 2018 and finishing runner-up in Hobart and Prague the same year.

This will be her third main draw appearance at the Miami Open, where she is yet to win a match.

Garcia v Buzarnescu Prediction and Tip

This should be a good contest. Garcia hasn’t been consistent this season, while Buzarnescu has won two matches over the last two days, including one over the Monterrey champion Leylah Fernandez. Expect this contest to go the distance.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
