Vondroušová Starts Strongly in 2021

Despite a first round loss at the Abu Dhabi Open and falling to Cori Gauff in the second round of the WTA Dubai more recently, Vondrousova will be glad with her showing in Australia earlier this year.

Starting out at the Yarra Valley Classic before the season’s first Grand Slam, Vondrousova romped past Varvara Gracheva in the opening round, and then needed three sets apiece against Vera Zvonareva and Nadia Podoroska, but managed to come out on top both times.

It took the brilliance of Garbine Muguruza to stall the former French Open runner-up short on her feet there.

At the Australian Open, Vondrousova could have gone even further than the fourth round she finally managed but in a strangely insipid performance against Su-wei Hsieh, she fell in straight sets despite being an overwhelming favourite to win that encounter.

Vondrousova now plays in a tournament where she had last made it as far as the quarterfinals with wins overs Barbora Strycova, Jelena Ostapenko, Elise Mertens and Tatiana Maria. Can she start off with a strong performance here leading into another deep run at this competition?

Qiang Comes Away with a Fighting Win

A quarterfinalist the last the Miami Open was held, Qiang Wang has had her struggles this season but would be glad to have come away with a three-set win over qualifier Aliona Bolsova.

It was just Qiang’s third win to go with seven defeats and more importantly a win in three sets, something we had spoken about in our previous preview to be a problem for the former world number 12. Having lost six of her seven matches in three sets, Qiang finally got one back, as she came through 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 against Bolsova.

Earlier this season, Qiang had suffered defeats at the hands of Daria Kasatkina, Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani to kick-start her 2021. A rare win over Madison Inglis at the Phillip Island Trophy followed soon after but so did a defeat in the very next round and when she lost to Jil Teichmann in the second round of the Adelaide International, things had started to looked bad for the Chinese player.

Jessica Pegula’s excellent form meant there was no stopping Wang Qiang’s defeat run and that was then followed by another loss in Dubai, where she went down to Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Can she now make it her first back to back wins of the season?

Vondroušová v Qiang Prediction and Tip

It’s interesting to note that Vondrousova is a favourite but not by as much as we would have thought given her opponent’s struggles. Backing her at 4/7 to win this.

Tip: Vondrousova to win: 4/7 (bet365)
