Cori Gauff v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

The Latvian won their only previous meeting, defeating the 17-year-old in the first round of the U.S. Open last year. The match had gone into the third set, before Sevastova won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Gauff Brings Solid Form To Miami

World No. 36 Cori Gauff will be making her second main draw appearance at the Miami Open and comes into the tournament with solid back-to-back performances at Adelaide International and Dubai Tennis Championships.

The 17-year-old, who caught the eye when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon on her Grand Slam debut in 2019, is 11-5 from all matches this year.

In her first three tournaments, the Abu Dhabi Open, Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open, Gauff won her first round matches but lost in the second rounds.

She followed the 3-3 start with a run to the semifinals in Adelaide. Winning four three-setters in a row, which included a three-set win in the second qualifying round, she set up a semifinal clash with Belinda Bencic and took the first set before the Swiss rebounded to prevent the American from winning a fifth consecutive three-setter.

She carried the Adelaide pattern and form to Dubai, winning her first two rounds over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Marketa Vandrousova, both in three before finally winning in straight sets over Tereza Martincova in the Round of 16. She lost to Jil Teichmann in the last eight.

Sevastova Edges Out Danilovic

Facing Gauff in the second round will be former World No. 11 Anastasija Sevastova, who edged past Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in the first round on Wednesday.

The Latvian needed two hours and 23 minutes to beat Danilovic 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).

The 30-year-old who has won four singles titles in her career, came into the tournament with a 4-6 record this season.

Beginning the year in Abu Dhabi, Sevastova was knocked out of the first round by Spain’s Paula Badosa after a three-set contest. At the Yarra River Classic, she won her first-round match against American Madison Brengle but was overpowered by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next.

The 2018 U.S. Open semifinalist struggled with form at the Australian Open as well, as she could win just four games in her first round defeat to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

Her dismal run continued at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she squandered a one-set advantage to lose her first round match to Romania’s Ana Bogdan.

Following the 1-4 start, she found form in Adelaide, beating Caroline Garcia and Christine McHale on way to the quarterfinals before falling to Jil Teichmann in three.

In Dubai, she demolished Bernarda Pera 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, before going down to Karolina Pliskova in a three-set affair.

Sevastova, who won the last of her four WTA titles in Latvia in 2019, was in woeful touch in 2020, winning just two of her 12 matches, one of which was against Gauff at the U.S. Open.

Gauff v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

Going by their last meeting and current form, expect the match to go the distance, with Gauff avenging her U.S. Open defeat.

Tip: Evans to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
