Medvedev ended 2020 on a strong note with victories at the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals in London. This was followed by an unbeaten run at the ATP Cup and a strong run at the Australian Open before a somewhat disappointing straight sets loss to world number one Novak Djokovic.
A first round loss at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam to Dusan Lajovic made one wonder if we were going to see a decline in form from Medvedev, similar to mid 2020. But, the trend seemed to have been stalled over at Marseille.
The Russian looked good all week setting up a clinical win against rising Italian Jannik Sinner and in a tight final against French doubles specialist Pierre- Hugues Herbert, he held his ground well to register another title with a close three set win.
Now world number two, and with the Big Three and Dominic Thiem not playing here in Miami, Medvedev will surely have his eyes on another Masters 1000 title, and a first here in Florida.

Surprise Querrey Win For Taiwanese Veteran
Lu Yen-hsun is a Taiwanese veteran and is playing at a Masters 1000 despite having a world ranking of no.1020, due to the protected ranking rules. Lu has not been a regular on the tour for the past three seasons as a result of shoulder and elbow injuries.
The 2010 Wimbledon quarter-finalist was once ranked just outside the top 30 in the world, but failed to win a single match since his injury in 2018 despite making returns with his protected ranking three times already.
Up against big serving American veteran Sam Querrey in the opener here, it was a clinical display by the man from Taiwan who clinched the match 6-3,6-4 and will be delighted to make the next round, despite a very challenging opponent in top seed Medvedev.
Medvedev v Lu Prediction and Tip
A rather lopsided match-up awaits us; with Medvedev who has been in prime form of late and an aging Lu who although looked good in his opener, is returning from being out for three seasons and is 37 years old now.
Nothing to be taken away from Lu after the impressive Querrey win, but expect Medvedev to register a routine win in quick time.
