Milos Raonic v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

Raonic and Thompson have never played each other before this.

Raonic is a Three-Time Quarterfinalist

Canada’s Raonic has reached the quarterfinal at the Miami Masters on three previous occasions but was bundled out in the third round the last time he played at this competition. He enters this year’s edition on the back of a surprising second loss defeat at the hands of Dominik Koepfer in the second round of the Acapulco Open before this.

What Raonic would hope for is to take a cue from his showing at the Australian Open where the fast courts helped him immensely as he came through three rounds of competition to set up a meeting with Novak Djokovic in the round of 16.

And while he had Djokovic pegged at a set apiece, Raonic lost the match in four in the end.

What Raonic will hope for is to overturn some of his inconsistencies in recent best of three matches and push on to round three. He has an opponent who has had his own struggles but given the Canadian’s tendency to drop focus during matches, it could set things nicely.

Thompson Dumps Delbonis in Opener

It has been a tale of two halves for Australia’s Thompson so far, who won the first three matches he played this season and then lost the next three.

Starting out at the Great Ocean Road Open, Thompson reached the quarterfinal where he was a favourite against Thiago Monteiro but fell 6-4, 6-4 to the Brazilian. An opening defeat at the Australian Open to Casper Ruud followed soon after before he lost to Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round at Dubai.

What was interesting to note is the manner in which Thompson won his opener against Delbonis, needing two hours and 14 minutes for a straight-set win. One of the chief reasons for that was the length of the opening set which went into a tie-breaker and lasted an hour and 18 minutes.

Thompson broke early but dropped his own serve in the seventh game before the set was pushed into a tie-breaker. There, Thompson first saved a set-point before getting one of his own which he converted.

The only break of serve in the second set came in the fifth game and while the Aussie needed to save a couple of break-points while serving for the match, he did that and converted the second match-point he got.

Raonic v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Raonic is a heavy favourite but we believe it might not be a straight-set win for him and that Thompson might surprise him a little.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 12/5 (bet365)
