Simona Halep v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

On the WTA circuit, there have been eight matches between Halep and Sevastova and the Romanian leads 6-2. She is also on a five-match winning streak against Sevastova, having last lost to her in 2011.

Their latest meeting, however, came in 2018, in Doha where Halep crushed her opponent in straight sets. In fact all of Halep’s previous five wins have been in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory in Bucharest in 2016.

Halep Needed Time to Get into Her Own

It wasn’t the best performance from Halep’s racquet to start things off but the two-time Miami Open semifinalist would be relieved she got the work down. Halep came back from a set down against Caroline Garcia in her second round match to win 6-0 in the final set and advance to round three.

This was her seventh win of the season, to go with two defeats as she looks to make deeper inroads into tournaments than she did at the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open earlier this season.

A quarterfinalist at both, it should be quickly remembered Halep is coming off fitness troubles which caused her to miss some tennis since the middle of February and that was also the reason why she fell a set and a break down in the second against Garcia.

The turnaround came in the sixth game of the second set when she broke back to make it 3-3 and then did that again as Garcia served to stay in the set at 4-5. The final set became an easy affair once Halep started holding with ease and Garcia began making mistakes on her own serve.

With some confidence back, Halep could prove to be more than a handful in her third round match here.

Sevastova Surprising After Poor Start to the Season

Sevastova had a 4-6 win-loss record coming into this tournament and while she was a favourite in her opening round match against Olga Danilovic, she was taken to three sets and a tie-breaker in the final set by her unheralded opponent.

Which is why when she lost the first set of her second round match against the talented American Cori Gauff, her campaign at the Miami Open looked like it was finished.

Gauff broke Sevastova early in the second set as well, but the Latvian player continued to battle on, breaking right back and then reeling off five games in a row to level the match. And with the momentum having shifted, Sevastova also overcame another break of serve in the third set to complete a solid, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in the second round.

Halep won’t crumble as easily as Gauff did but can Sevastova make things difficult?

Halep v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

While a straight-set win, at 1/2, looks a good possibility, Sevastova’s fighting capabilities might come to the fore here and there could be a few games played.

Tip: Halep to win AND Over 18.5 games in the match: 11/10 (bet365)
