Karolina Pliskova v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

Both their previous two meetings have come this year itself, with Pegula having won both without dropping a set. In fact Pegula’s domination can be underlined from the fact she has lost just six games in total across the two matches against Pliskova.

Pliskova Routs Zheng But…

A first round bye for Pliskova was followed by a 6-2, 6-2 rout of Saisai Zheng in the second round but the fact is her real test starts now.

Because in the last two tournaments she has played, Pliskova has done exactly that; won the first match of the tournament and then faced Pegula in her second encounter. And unfortunately for her, despite being ranked sixth in the world she has been at the receiving end of a rout like she wasn’t even in the top 50.

Pliskova, once a world number one despite not winning a Grand Slam, hasn’t had the best of starts to the season either. Even before those back to back defeats to Pegula, the Czech’s best showing was a third round appearance at the Australian Open which, to go with second round losses at both, the Abu Dhabi Open and Yarra Valley Classic just show the kind of rut she finds herself in.

Can she look to tweak her game enough to push Pegula back or will it be three in three for the American?

Pegula Sends Storm Away

In a match lasting an hour and 33 minutes, Pegula came away a straight set winner over Australia’s Storm Sanders in her second round match following an opening bye.

Pegula, who didn’t begin too well when she suffered a break of serve in the very first game of the match, clawed back with a break back in the very next game. She then followed it up by saving three break-points in the fifth game before carving out a second break of serve before closing out the set.

The second set gave Sanders a better chance of making a match of the encounter when she broke Pegula to lead 4-2. But that game almost served as a way to shake the American out of a possible reverie as she ran through the rest of the set by winning the next four games and with it, the match, 6-3, 6-4.

Pegula had come into this tournament on the back of a semifinal appearance at the WTA Doha as a qualifier and then making it as far as the quarterfinals in Dubai.

She has the wood on Pliskova and will hold a huge psychological advantage on her opponent here.

Pliskova v Pegula Prediction and Tip

No surprises here as Pegula starts off 8/13 to beat Pliskova for the third time in as many weeks. What could happen is Pliskova might come up with a better than earlier showing but will that be enough remains to be seen.

Tip: Games Handicap Pegula -2.5: 5/6 (bet365)
