Felix Auger-Aliassime v John Isner Head to Head

The world number 28 Isner has beaten the 18th-ranked Auger-Aliassime in their only previous meeting which came in Miami in 2019. That match came at the semifinal stage of that edition of the competition.

Auger-Aliassime Outclasses Herbert in Opener

A semifinalist at the Miami Open the last time it was played, Auger-Aliassime will hope to continue with his strong ways in this competition when he takes to court on Sunday. This is after he got a first round bye and overcame Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round in straight sets.

Both sets followed a similar pattern with Auger-Aliassime getting the early break, then losing that initiative before retaliating with a decisive break of serve that ended the set.

The difference between the two players proved to be the points won off their first serves; the Canadian got 62% of his first serves in as compared to his opponent’s 48% but then he also won 81% of those points even as his French opponent grabbed only 59%.

The difference in the total points won, eight in favour of Auger-Aliassime, might not seem a lot but with the Canadian winning key moments better, he grabbed the match easily in the end.

Auger-Aliassime has already made it as far as the final of the Murray River Open this season and entered the fourth round of the Australian Open as well.

Isner Scrapes Past McDonald

It looks like the quarantine-like conditions at different tournaments is affecting some players more than the others and Isner looks to belong in the former group. Having appealed to the authorities to relax some of the rules around the pandemic-related quarantining for tennis players, the American needed an hour and 47 minutes to get past Mackenzie McDonald in his second round match.

After receiving a first round bye, Isner came back from being a set down to carve out a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over McDonald in the second round.

Interestingly, in a match that went for that long, there were only two breaks of serve for both players. McDonald’s two came in the first set when Isner found it difficult to hold serve, but he followed that up with the next two sets without any issues – he didn’t even face a break-point.

As opposed to that, Isner broke his opponent once apiece in the second and third set, in the eighth game of the second set and the 11th of the third set before serving it out to claim his third round spot.

And while he did that, one thing’s for certain. He will need to do a lot better than how he played in round two to overcome the in-form Auger-Aliassime.
