Lorenzo Sonego v Daniel Elahi Galan Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 25-year-old Sonego and the 24-year-old Colombian at the ATP level. They did meet at a qualifying round in Milan in 2016, which the Italian won in straight sets.

Sonego Knocks Out Fratangelo

World No. 34 Lorenzo Sonego defeated American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo in straight sets on Saturday to enter the Round of 32 of the Miami Open.

The Italian needed an hour and 46 minutes to beat the 233rd-ranked player 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

This is only the second time in his career that Sonego has gone past the second round in a Masters 1000 event. In 2018, he had reached the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters.

The 24th seed, who had come into the tournament with a 4-6 record, struck 10 aces, won 78 percent of first serve points, failed to save either of the two break points he faced, but broke his opponent’s serve thrice from seven chances to move into the next round.

The Italian, who stunned World No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the final in Vienna last year, won the Antalya Open title in 2019.

Sonego’s best performance this season came in Montpellier, when he defeated Hugo Gaston and Sebastian Korda to reach the quarterfinal, before going down to David Goffin. That was the only tournament this year where he won two matches in a row.

In his previous appearance at the Miami Open in 2019, Sonego entered the main draw through qualifiers and then defeated Slovakia’s Martin Klizan in the first round before going down to John Isner in the Round of 64.

Galan Upsets De Minaur

Daniel Elahi Galan rallied from a set down to stun 15th seed Alex De Minaur in the second round on Saturday.

The Colombian, who is making a Masters 1000 debut in Miami, needed two hours and 36 minutes to defeat the Aussie 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Saving 10 of 13 break points and converting four of eight, the 24-year-old improved to 6-4 in 2021.

On Thursday, Galan had needed an hour and 36 minutes to defeat Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

The 113th-ranked Galan, who reached the semifinal in Houston in 2019, has been playing great tennis this month, and was particularly brilliant at the Chile Open, where the 6’3” right-hander defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier and Spain’s Pablo Andujar and Roberto Carballes Baena en route to the semifinal before falling to eventual champion Christian Garin in straight sets.

Sonego v Galan Prediction and Tip

Galan is the lower-ranked player, but he has already shown that he is capable of causing an upset. Sonego won’t take his opponent lightly. Expect a good contest with the Colombian stretching the Italian.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
