The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the Argentine and the man from Belarus.

Pella’s First Match Since Melbourne

Pella won his first, and to date. Only senior ATP title on clay in Brazil two years ago, having been in three previous finals and lost all of them.

However, since failing to defend his title in Rio just over a year ago, he has played sparingly. And this will be his first match since the Australian Open where he was knocked out in the first round by Borna Coric in straight sets.

His only other matches in 2021 came in the ATP Cup where he had mixed fortunes representing Argentina – he beat Kei Nishikori of Japan, but lost t0 Andrey Rublev of Russia.

Nor did he appear much on tour in 2020. After losing in the first round of the US Open, he stuck to his favourite surface of clay, with his best results coming in Kitzbuhel and the French Open where he got to the second round on each occasion.

Gerasimov Searching for Maiden Title

Gerasimov is still searching for his maiden win on the ATP tour, having been beaten in the final of the Maharashtra Open by Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic last February.

Unlike his opponent, he has already played a lot of tennis in 2021, although he did not feature in the Miami Open.

He reached the second round of the Australian Open beaten by the Russian Aslan Karatsev and then followed that up by reaching the semi-final in Montpellier, beating Andy Murray in the first round before eventually succumbing to David Goffin.

Since then, he has only won one won match though in Marseille, and was beaten in the first round in Dubai by Karatsev again, who went on to lift the title.

Clay is not his preferred surface.

Pella v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Normally Pella would start the clear favourite to win this match on clay, his preferred surface. The only doubt is over his lack of recent match practice. However, at least the Argentine should be fresh and ready to go.

Tip: Pella to win: 5/6 (bet365)
