Amanda Anisimova v Magda Linette Head to Head

In their only previous meeting, Linette had overcome Anisimova in the second round of the 2019 Wimbledon. Linette had won 6-4, 7-5.

Anisimova Hasn’t Played Much All Season

Entering into her first clay court match of the season, Anisimova will be playing just her fifth match overall on the tour this year. Having battled injuries for a lot of the past 12 or so months, the American played a match on the ITF circuit earlier this year before featuring in Dubai and Miami after that.

And at both those tournaments, she won her opening round matches, defeating Ana Konjuh and Sloane Stephens respectively in straight sets, only to lose the second.

In Dubai, she was drawn up against Muguruza in the second round, and a 6-4, 6-2 defeat was on expected lines given the kind of form her Spanish opponent has been all season. And against Bianca Andreescu, the eventual finalist at the Miami Open, Anisimova did put up a brave fight, before losing in three sets which consisted of two tie-breakers.

The question now is whether Anisimova can make this quick switch over to clay on a surface she holds her best Grand Slam result. An overall career record of 15-9 on clay was propped up her Bogota Open win and French Open semifinal in 2019.

Unfortunately for the American she hasn’t played too much on the surface since then and add that to fact she has featured in only four matches all of this year anyway, it would be interesting to see how she goes here.

Linette’s Played Just Two Matches

A knee injury has been the cause of Linette’s disrupted 2021 season so far with the 50th-ranked Polish player having not begun her season till about two weeks ago when she featured at the Miami Open.

And while she fell in the second round at the competition, Linette would have been pleased to get some playing time in Miami. She overcame Robin Montgomery in the first round in a three-setter before falling to Johanna Konta in the second. However, she faces a couple of issues coming into her opening round match here in Charleston.

To add to her rustiness, Linette hasn’t had a great record on clay all career.

Last season, for instance, Linette won just two of the five matches she played in, but even that was better than the 2-7 win-loss record she had in 2019. Which means while she takes on an opponent who is herself slightly rusty due to the lack of tennis, things could get difficult for her.

Anisimova v Linette Prediction and Tip

Anisimova is 2/5 to win this one and it’s tough to see how Linette, playing just her third match of the season on a surface she usually doesn’t win too much on, can get past the American. Backing an easy win for Anisimova.

Tip: Anisimova to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
