Ivashka Coming off Miami Second Round
Ivashka spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit, where he has six finals, all of them in hard court events, picking up two wins in the latter part of last year, in Istanbul, and Ortisei in Italy.
He also reached as high as 80 in the world in the ATP rankings two years ago, but he has played sparingly in 3021 so far, losing in the first round of the Australian Open to the Russian Roman Saifuddin, and losing at the same stage in a Challenger event in Biella, Italy.
However, he then emulated his feat of 2019, by reaching the second round in Miami, pulling off a minor surprise by beating the world 79, Kwon Soon Woo of South Korea, before being beaten by Denis Shapovalov.
Martinez Back at Home on Clay
Martinez is back on the surface on which he grew up playing and where he feels most comfortable. All but one of his 19 finals on the junior tours have been in clay court events, and has one won nine of those.
He has had also recent success in the Andalucía region, reaching the final of the Challenger event in Alicante, and a month later winning both the singles and doubles in Marbella, a short distance from where this tournament is being staged.
He has played in even fewer tournaments than his opponent in 2021, although he did surprise many people by reaching the third round at the Australian Open for the first time, eventually losing to the Serb Dasun Lajovic.
He then tool more than a month off before reappearing again at the Miami Masters. However, he was forced to retire from his first round match with Tennys Sandgren due to injury, The American was leading by a set and a break at the time.
