Petra Kvitova v Storm Sanders Head to Head

This will be the first match between Czech Kvitova and the 187th-ranked Aussie Sanders.

Kvitova Equally Solid on Clay

While Kvitova is often known for her performances on grass, on which she won a couple of Wimbledon titles and hard court surface where she has bagged 19 of her 28 WTA tournament wins, her record on clay isn’t one to gloss over.

Kvitova has made it to the finals of six tournaments on clay, and won five of them including three at the Madrid Open. And as recently as the previous year’s French Open, Kvitova went as far as the semifinal at the French Open, winning all her matches in straight sets before the younger legs of Sofia Kenin got the better of her.

This year, the Czech has seen both, a title win and an injury issue that forced her to retire from a tournament. She defeated Garbine Muguruza in the final of the WTA Doha but as she took on Jil Teichmann in the opener in Dubai the following week, the pain from a previous injury forced her to call it quits.

She made it as far as the fourth round in Miami before going down to Elina Svitolina, showing she had recovered from her fitness concerns but the adjustment back to clay would be something to watch out. Fortunately for Kvitova, she looks like she can ease into this one against an opponent ranked that low.

Sanders Gets Past Asia

Yep, Sanders didn’t feature in any of the tournaments played in Asia this year but more importantly, she also got past Asia Muhammad in the first round here. The Aussie won 6-2, 6-4 after having earlier defeated Gabriela Dabrowski and Caroline Dolehide in the qualifiers to get to the main draw.

Sanders got the early break in the first set, only to be broken back in the third game. However, once she broke back in the fourth, there was no looking back and the Aussie added another one as Asia served to stay in the set at 2-5.

The second set was a lot tighter with the pair exchanging breaks of serves on two separate occasions to get to 4-4. Sanders held on in the ninth game but then got a break-point in the 10th which she converted to wrap up the set and match to march into the second round.

This follows her performances in Adelaide, where as a qualifier she had defeated Ajla Tomljanovic and Yulia Putintseva to go as far as the quarterfinals, and in Miami where Sanders made it to the second round.

Can she now add a major scalp under her belt?

Kvitova v Sanders Prediction and Tip

It’s 1/5 for a Kvitova win but we expect Sanders to put up a brave front and push her more pedigreed opponent but one who hasn’t played on clay for a while.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
