Yulia Putintseva v Zarina Diyas Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two players, of which one has come in the main draw of a WTA tournament while the remaining two have been in the qualifying rounds. Diyas leads 2-1, having won in the quarterfinal of the 2017 Tokyo Open, and then beaten her opponent in the qualifiers of the New Haven Open in 2018.

Putintseva pulled one back in 2019 when she overcame Diyas in straight sets in the qualifiers of the 2019 WTA Sydney.

Putintseva Concerned about Form?

It might probably be too early to push the panic buttons because it’s not as if Putintseva is on a multi-match losing streak but for a player who was looking to challenge the top 25 at one stage this season, her results haven’t quite been as sublime.

In two of the five tournaments Putintseva has played this year, she has managed to make it to the third round – in Abu Dhabi and at the Australian Open – but other than those, she has a 2-3 win-loss record. This includes her recent opening loss to Nina Stojanovic at the Miami Open, which followed a defeat at the hands of Storm Sanders.

These aren’t opponent she would have expected to lose to that early in those competitions and Putintseva will hope a change in scene would help her overcome her set of poor results.

Putintseva hasn’t played a lot of matches on clay but her only career WTA title did come on this surface, at Nurnberg in 2019. Other than that, she has also made it as far as the quarterfinals of the French Open on two separate occasions, making it bit of a favourite surface for her.

Diyas Nudges Past Natalia

Diyas spent just an hour and 15 minutes to get past Natalia Vikhlyantseva in her opening round encounter, beating her opponent 6-3, 6-1.

The Kazakh faced bit of a resistance in the opening set when Vikhlyantseva broke back to level things out at 1-1 but two breaks of serves from there on gave Diyas the edge. And while she dropped serve one more time in that opening set, the extra buffer of a serve in hand proved to be crucial as she ran off to clinch the opener.

The second proved to be bit of a cakewalk, as Diyas ran away to a 4-0 lead before her opponent could blink and helped herself to three match-points at 5-1, converting the third.

Before this, Diyas had begun reasonably well by getting to the third round at both, the Australian Open and Phillip Island Trophy and then shocked Venus Williams in the Miami Open first round. Can she now tame her countrywoman in this one?

Putintseva v Diyas Prediction and Tip

Putintseva will be hungry for success and if fully fit, should take her opponent down on a surface she loves playing. Straight-set win for Putintseva here.

Tip: Putintseva to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
