Yafan Wang v Viktorija Tomova Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.  This will be the first match between the two 26-year-olds.

Wang Struggled Past Lowly Ranked Columbian

Before Monday, Wang had played six matches in 2021 and lost them all, and had not even won a set in the last three events she entered.

She ended that dismal run on Monday, but was made to fight all the way in her match with the Columbian Emiliano Arango, ranked 484 in the world.

Wang dropped her serve in the opening game of the match, but two breaks of her own were enough to earn her the set.

However, she dropped her serve twice at the start of the second set, and, although she fought back to level, Arango broke her once more to take the match to a decider.

When Wang dropped her serve at the start of the third set she must have feared the worst. But she broke back, and serving to stay in the match, the pressure proved too much for the Columbian and Wang sealed the win on her second match point.

Tomova Achieves First WTA Tour Win of 2021

Tomova, who normally plays on the ITF tour, won her first match on the senior WTA circuit on Monday, having previously failed at the first round stage in Dubai and St. Petersburg, and having failed to qualify for Lyon and Miami.

Up against the German, Amma-Lena Friedsam, the world 122, Tomova was in control right from the start, as Friedsam dropped her opening three service games. Tomova gave one of the breaks back, but was able to serve out for the set.

Th second went with serve until the seventh game, when Friedsam dropped hers serve once more. And then with the German serving to stay in the match, the Bulgarian broke one final and decisive time.

Wang v Tomova Prediction & Tip

Based on form alone, Tomova can be tipped to make further inroads into the competition. She had a comfortable first-round win, whilst Wang struggled to beat a player ranked 351 places below her in the world rankings.

Tip: Tomova to win: 1/2 (bet365)
