Anisimova Taken to Three by Linette

It’s been a slow start to the season for Anisimova and that lack of tennis seemed to reflect in her opening round match here in Charleston. Playing against Magda Linette, Anisimova needed to overcome the loss of the first set before settling in and claiming the match in just over two hours.

The first set was all about who could hold better with both players struggling on that count. There were six breaks of serves that took the two players to 5-5 before Linette dished out another break to the American and converted the first set-point she got.

Anisimova retaliated in style by breaking her opponent in the very second game of the second set and then doubling her advantage in the sixth game. A pair of breaks were exchanged further to end the set.

Things settled down a lot more in the final set with their respective serves and when Anisimova managed to convert her second break-point of the fourth game there, that was all that she needed to complete the victory.

Anisimova, who has a strong record on clay in the past, will hope this was a case of rustiness more than anything else.

Rogers Crashes Kristina’s Party

Former French Open quarterfinalist Rogers kick-started her clay swing this season by easing past Kristina Mladenovic in the first round here in Charleston. Needing an hour and 40 minutes, Rogers needed two breaks of serve in the first set and one in the second to record a 6-4, 6-3 victory, sailing into the second round.

Rogers never fell behind in her opening encounter, breaking Mladenovic late in the first set, then failing to close out the set on her own serve before making it three breaks in a row to complete the win.

The second set was a lot easier once she had broken her French opponent, and then saved three break-points on her own serve in the next game. She didn’t face another break-point and completed the victory off the third match-point she got.

Rogers has never won a WTA title in her career but has reached two finals and both those efforts came on clay. Been a while since that happened, but she could well be a player to beat in this one.

Anisimova v Rogers Prediction and Tip

On paper, there’s not much to choose between the two but Rogers could hold a slight edge given her record on clay, her performance in the first round and the fact she has played enough tennis this season to not be called rusty.

Tip: Rogers to win: 4/5 (bet365)
