Ons Jabeur v Alize Cornet Head to Head

The only previous meeting between Jabeur and Cornet came at the quarterfinal stage of the 2019 Eastbourne Open. Jabeur had pouched that one from being a set down.

Jabeur in Fine Fettle Again

Consistency has been the key to Jabeur’s steady rise into the top 30 and that has been on display in this competition yet again. The Tunisian player spent very little time in getting past Hailey Baptiste in her second round match to set up this second meeting with Cornet.

Jabeur, who had earlier won back to back matches in four different tournaments this season, needed just an hour and 10 minutes to win 6-3, 6-3 against Baptiste. She broke Baptiste twice in the first set to gain control and while Jabeur was broken back once, she retaliated with another break of serve to finish off the set.

In the second, Jabeur faced five break-points but saved all of them while breaking her opponent once in return.

With this win, Jabeur has now emulated her best showing here in Charleston, which was a round of 16 appearance in 2017. Can she now take this a step further by entering the quarterfinal and in turn winning three matches in a row for the first time since the 2020 French Open – also on clay?

Cornet Shocks Mertens

Such has been Elise Mertens’ form that it was hard to predict her defeat at the hands of the world number 59. Especially given the inconsistencies shown by Cornet.

However, on the day, it was Cornet who came away a winner, defeating the world number 17 in straight sets in a fighting two hour, seven minute match.

In a first set of swinging fortunes, Cornet went up a break, then conceded two breaks before the duo exchanged a further three more breaks of serve to take the set to 5-5. This included Cornet saving two set-points on Mertens’ serve, before she held on to her own and then broke the Dutchwoman yet again to win the opener.

Serving remained a difficult art in the second set too, with four breaks of serves from 1-1. Cornet then avoided getting broken in the seventh game, broke Mertens for the third time in a row and served out for the match to come through to the third round.

This victory gives Cornet back to back wins for the first time since the US Open last year and will be bit of a relief to her sliding rankings. Would that be enough to take Jabeur down though?

Jabeur v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Jabeur is 1/2 to win this and we will have to back her to come through despite Cornet’s fine showing against Mertens. Might be a three-setter but Jabeur to prevail in the end.

Tip: Jabeur to win: 1/2 (bet365)
