Petra Kvitova v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

They have played in two previous matches and Kvitova has won both those encounters. The first match came at the Indian Wells Open in 2016 where Kvitova was taken to three sets by her opponent, before she ousted Kovinic in the opener at the 2017 French Open, also in a three-setter.

Kvitova Storms Past Sanders

It needed Kvitova some time to get going in what was her first match on clay since her French Open 2020 semifinal defeat to Sofia Kenin but once she did, there was no looking back for her in her second round encounter against Australia’s Storm Sanders.

Kvitova needed an hour and 28 minutes to register a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Sanders to seal her third round berth against Kovinic.

What would please Kvitova no end was despite the change in surface, her serving was the least affected by it and she did not face a single break-point in the entire match. Kvitova also got just one breaking opportunity in the first set and frittered it away to take the set into a tie-breaker, where she overcame a 2-3 deficit to win 7-4.

The second set was bit of a one-way traffic though as Kvitova broke twice – in the sixth and eighth game – to complete the win.

The Czech, who is coming off a title win in Doha, but was then ousted in the second round in Dubai and fourth in Miami, should have her confidence high comig into this next round.

Kovinic Finds a Way Past Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez had entered this encounter as a huge favourite after having shown consistent improvement on the tour even as a teenager. The Monterrey Open winner, however, proved no match for the experience of Kovinic, who won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two and a quarter hours.

With this win, Kovinic made it two successive victories for the first time in 2021, having earlier won just two matches in the entire season.

Kovinic is no pushover though. Her record on clay last year suggests she can do a lot better than her current ranking of 91 suggests, having made it through to the main draw at the 2020 Italian Open and defeated Julia Goerges and Belinda Bencic in back to back matches.

She had earlier that season been a quarterfinalist at Istanbul and one of her two WTA final appearances had also come on clay.

Can she now push Kvitova enough to get her to crack?

Kvitova v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

While on paper, odds of 1/6 for a Kvitova win to 4/1 if Kovinic wins sound about right, the fact that Kovinic has just taken out a talented favourite means she will have some more fuel to take on the might of her two-time Grand Slam winning opponent. Games Handicap market looks tempting.

Tip: Games Handicap Kovinic +5.5: 5/6 (bet365)
