Can Karatsev Take His Hard Court Form to Clay?

In form Aslan Karatsev heads to the Monte-Carlo Masters with a 13-3 record in 2021.

The 27-year-old Russian, who was barely known before the start of the year, made heads turn with his stunning display at the Australian Open, where he reached the semifinal as a qualifier, and then went a step ahead and won his first career title at the ATP 500 in Dubai.

Currently ranked 28th in the world, the Russian was outside the top 100 before the start of the Australian Open. However, it was his terrific run on his main draw Grand Slam debut that saw him break into the top 50.

Having qualified for his first main draw at a major, Karatsev defeated Gianluca Mager, Egor Gerasimov, Diego Schwartzmann, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov en route to the final four, where he was beaten in straight sets by Novak Djokovic.

In his next tournament in Doha, Karatsev won his first round match with ease but faltered in the Round of 16, going down to Dominic Thiem in three.

He got back to winning ways in Dubai, defeating Gerasimov, Daniel Evans and Lorenzo Sonego on his way to the quarterfinal and then accounted for World No. 32 Jannik Sinner and World No. 8 Andrey Rublev respectively to reach his first career final. Having endured four back-to-back three-setters, Karatsev had an easy straight sets win against Lloyd Harris in the final to claim his maiden title.

He also reached the third round on his ATP 1000 debut in Miami, winning against Mikhail Kukushkin after getting a first round bye and then falling to Sebastian Korda in the Round of 32.

How good is he on clay? He has played nine of his 21 Futures and Challenger finals on clay and has a 5-4 record in those finals. So he can play on the surface. However, it will be interesting to see how he goes at the top level.

Musetti Knocks Out the Top Seed

Facing Karatsev in the first round will be Italian teen Lorenzo Musetti, who has been in good form over the last few weeks.

The Italian, who began the year by reaching two Challenger finals, stunned the world last month with his run to the semifinals in Acapulco, which included wins over Diego Schwartzmann, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov. His run of six victories in a row, including wins in the three qualifiers, ended with a semifinal defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The youngest player currently in the top-100 in the world, the World No. 90 Musetti carried the momentum to Miami, defeating Michael Mmoh and Benoit Paire in the first two rounds to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the second time in his young career.

A fourth round remained elusive though as he was beaten by Marin Cilic. Last year, Musetti had reached the third round in Rome.

The Italian continued his good form in Cagliari this week, defeating Dennis Novak and top seed Daniel Evans to reach a second quarterfinal this year, but was stopped by Laslo Djere from progressing further.

Karatsev v Musetti Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a very tricky first round match for Karatsev. Musetti has shown he can cause big upsets and likes playing on clay as well. An upset cannot be ruled out.

Tip: Musetti to win: 11/10 (bet365)
