David Goffin v Dan Evans Head to Head

The only previous time these two had faced off in a competitive match was at the 2020 ATP Cup when Great Britain took on Belgium. Evans came out a 6-4, 6-4 winner on the hard court surface that day.

Goffin Edges Past Zverev

It was one of the two big upsets of the tournament as Goffin scraped past the world number six Alexander Zverev in the third round of this competition.

In the end, Goffin needed just two sets to win the match, but Zverev did make it difficult for the Belgian till the very end, nearly pushing the match into its third hour. Goffin won 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Zverev had a chance to draw first blood in the first set when he got two break-point opportunities in the fourth game, and then warded off two chances on his own serve as well to take it to 3-3. However, it was Goffin who broke first, then stumbled on a set-point on Zverev’s serve before saving another break-point to clinch the opener.

The second set was a cagier affair with neither player giving the other an inch. In many ways, this would have frustrated Zverev, who also missed out on three break-point opportunities in the sixth game.

Goffin got an early mini-break advantage in the tie-breaker that followed to take a 6-2 lead but it looked like he had lost out on the opportunity to win the match when he lost five points in a row. The match then turned back on its head with Goffin then winning three in a row to complete the victory.

Earlier in the competition, Goffin had overcome Marin Cilic and Marco Cecchinato to make it 3-0 on clay this year.

Evans Demolishes Djokovic

Who would have thought! After Novak Djokovic came through to the third round with an easy opening win over talented youngster Jannik Sinner, most would have given Evans next to no chance of winning a set, let alone coming through in straight sets against the world number one.

That’s exactly how things turned out though.

Evans broke Djokovic twice early in the first set but then looked like he had let the advantage slip away when the Serb levelled it out at 4-4. That didn’t seem to bother the Brit too much as he broke right back before serving it out to win the opening set.

It still looked like Djokovic’s match to lose when he got an early break of serve in the second set as he raced to a 3-0 lead but Evans hung in there, broke back in the fifth game, saved a break-point in the eighth and 10th games before breaking the Serb in the 11th. And he served it out the next game to 15 to clinch the biggest win of his life.

Can he now build on this victory on clay after having begun the season with a maiden title win on the ATP tour?

Goffin v Evans Prediction and Tip

Evans, despite his win over Djokovic, still starts out at 13/10 here while Goffin is a favourite at 8/13. The kind of form Evans has shown all week should suffice, in my mind, to him to start out on level terms here, which is why backing him to win a set here at the very least.

Tip: Evans to win a set: 1/2 (bet365)
