Andrey Rublev v Casper Ruud Head to Head

The players have met three times prior to this on the tour, with Rublev winning on all occasions. Rublev won their first two meetings on the Hamburg clay and was leading by two sets to love at the Australian Open earlier this year before Ruud pulled out.

Rublev Accomplishes The Impossible

Andrey Rublev has been in phenomenal form of late, winning five titles in 2020, making his first ever Tour Finals and breaking into the top eight in the ATP rankings. He continued his strong run of form at the start of the season too, leading Russia to the finals of the ATP Cup, and was in ominous form at the Australian Open, until the quarter-finals where he ran into compatriot Daniil Medvedev and lost in straight sets.

The Russian added to his title count at Rotterdam winning another ATP 500, and looked the favorite in both the tournaments in the Middle-East, at Doha and Dubai as well at the Miami Open Masters 1000. But, surprise semi-final defeats to Roberto Bautista Agut in Doha and Aslan Karatsev in Dubai derailed his season ever so slightly, followed by another semi-final loss to eventual Miami champion Hubert Hurkacz.

Having won the ATP 500 on the Hamburg clay last year, Rublev started the clay season looking confident as he recorded a convincing opening win against Salvatore Caruso. Running into Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut who has been playing some good tennis this year as well, the Russian had his hands full winning the match in a decider, setting himself up for the toughest task yet of his career, i.e. playing Rafa Nadal on a clay court, this time at Monte Carlo.

Against all odds, Rublev was off to an explosive start against Nadal breaking twice in the first set to capture the set 6-2. The Russian got the early break in the second set as well and at 4-2, looked all set for an unbelievable straight sets win. However, a Nadal fightback was always on the cards, and he came back strong to break Rublev twice and win the second set 6-4.

There was no drop in the Rublev level in the third set who continued the momentum, breaking Nadal three times , and although he was broken by the 11-time champion once, Rublev clinched the set 6-2 for what will be the biggest win of his career thus far perhaps and will truly fancy his chances for a title run here this weekend,

Ruud On a Good Run Himself…

World No. 26 Casper Ruud is a three-time finalist on the tour and the winner of the 2020 Argentina Open with a game well-suited to the clay. He started his season with an opening round loss at the Melbourne ATP 250, but then went to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open. This was the first time he had reached the Round of 16 at a major, before he withdrew against Andrey Rublev in the Round of 16, while trailing two sets to love.

At the Mexican Open, Ruud won the first two rounds but then withdrew before the start of the quarterfinal against eventual champion Alexander Zverev. He featured at the Andalucia Open last week  but fell to rising Spaniard  Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal.

Ruud was off to a convincing start here in Monte Carlo, with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Danish wonder-kid Holger Rune, before impressive displays against Diego Schwartzman and Pablo Carreno Busta placing him in the quarter-finals against defending champion Fabio Fognini.

With Fognini starting off playing the better tennis, Ruud ensured that he hung in and played the bigger points better and once he had clinched the first set, there was some evident frustration for the Italian, who lost his way thereafter, resulting in a straight sets win for Ruud making his first Masters 1000 semi-final.

Rublev v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Both players have looked good this week and will be hoping for their first Masters 1000 final. While Ruud has stacked up some impressive wins, Rublev has been on a tear all year and comes in with the confidence of beating Nadal on clay in the previous round.

Expect Rublev to prevail in two hard fought sets.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
