Marco Cecchinato v Viktor Troicki Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the Geneva Challenger of 2014, with Troicki winning that in straight sets in that indoor hard court tie.

Cecchinato 3-5 on Clay in 2021

For someone who has won all of his 14 Futures, Challengers and ATP titles on clay, Cecchinato’s form on this surface has been anything but exemplary over the last couple of seasons.

This year it has looked even worse.

Over the five tournaments Cecchinato has played in 2021, he has managed to win his opening round match in three of them while losing in the second round there. And in the remaining two, at Santiago and Buenos Aires, Cecchinato has fallen in his opener.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, the former world number 16 had to win back to back matches in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw where he edged past Dominik Koepfer in the opener but then fell to David Goffin rather easily in the second.

It’s not a very difficult start here for Cecchinato but given his recent results, there would always be question-marks about his chances till he starts getting more consistency.

Troicki Desperate for a Main Draw Win

The last time Troicki won a main draw match, it was the early part of February, last year. His game clicked enough for him to overcome Sumit Nagal in the first round of the Pune Open but he then fell ill and had to withdraw from the competition.

Later he had claimed he might have contracted the coronavirus during that tournament because his symptoms were so debilitating.

Unfortunately for him, Troicki has been relegated to playing at the Challenger level since with the odd qualifier for an ATP tournament pushed in without too much success.

In fact, this opening round match at home as a wild-card is only his fifth main draw match on the ATP circuit since that Pune Open win. He walks in with four defeats from the previous four matches.

And while Cecchinato, his opponent at this one is himself struggling to get going, Troicki’s won’t have it too easy in a tournament he had played the first time it was held – in 2009.

Cecchinato v Troicki Prediction and Tip

This points to a Cecchinato victory but it might not get too easy and we might see Troicki punish anything loose despite being a whopping second favourite at 2/1. Might even win a set here.

Tip: Troicki to win a set – Yes: 10/11 (bet365)
