Wang Qiang v Anastasia Gasanova Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between the 50th-ranked Chinese player Wang Qiang and the world number 181 Gasanova.

Qiang 3-8 This Season

Like a few of the other players who struggled to get going after the pandemic break, Qiang’s struggles can be pointed out through her record this year. A visibly rusty-looking Qiang has won only three of the 11 matches she has played this season.

Making it worse is that those victories have been staggered across the three and a half months, with the Chinese player getting no momentum in any of the competitions. Her best performance came at the Miami Open, the last tournament she played where she reached the second round and lost to Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets.

And then there is a small matter of Qiang’s issues on clay.

She hasn’t played on this surface for 23 months, having last featured at the 2019 French Open where she was bundled out in the second round. Her best showing on clay has been a third round appearance at both, the French Open and the Madrid Open – all of it an indicator how the former world number 12 and two-time WTA title winner will find it tough to get going on dirt.

Gasanova Making Clay Debut

In a year in which she has already played in her first WTA main draw match – and excelled in two tournaments – Gasanaova will now make a dash for clay. The Russian will look to draw on her experience from the two competitions in which she surprised a few players this year.

At the first, in Abu Dhabi, Gasanova was on her WTA debut after having qualified for the main draw and shocked Karolina Pliskova on her way through to the third round.

A few appearances on the ITF circuit later, she featured at her home competition, the St. Petersburg Open and registered a win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to enter the last eight.

And now, with back to back wins in the qualifiers, Gasanova has entered the main draw of this clay court competition with a hope to surprise her higher-ranked but highly rusty opponent.

Qiang v Gasanova Prediction and Tip

While Wang Qiang starts a favourite at 4/7, Gasanova’s ability to up the ante in such tournaments combined with her opponent’s recent struggles make it a more even contest.

Tip: Gasanova to win: 11/8 (bet365)
