Friedsam was once ranked as high as 45 in the world, but that was five years ago, at a time when she was reaching WTA tournament finals, winning in Suzhou in 2014, and losing in San Antonio two years later.

Since then, her biggest successes have come in doubles events, and she won the title in Stuttgart two years ago with partner Mona Barthel. She was also a runner-up in the Premier Mandatory Sardinia Open with Raluca Olaru last year.

Singles-wise, her best performance of the year so far was her third round appearance in an IFT event in France at the start of the year. Subsquent to that, she has suffered a series of early exists from tournaments.

Forced to qualify in Stuttgart, she was made to battle past compatriot Stephanie Wagner, the world 303, in three sets, before enjoying a more comfortable victory over the Georgian Ekaterina Gorgodze.

Eikeri, A Norwegian Qualifier

Although she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in doubles as a junior, Eikeri has struggled to translate her junior form to the senior tour, with most of her successes limited to the ITF circuit.

She has been in 19 finals at that level, winning 11 of them, but her last victory came back in 2017.

Like her opponent, she has enjoyed more recent success in doubles and last month she won a junior title in Russia, with partner Shaliman Taibi of Belarus.

And, like Friedsam, she came through two rounds of qualifying for a rare appearance in a WTA main draw. First she had to overcome Antonia Lottner, beating the German in three sets and then she defeated the world 476, Angelica Moratelli of Italy, this time in straight sets.

Friedsam v Eikeri Prediction and Tip

Friedsam should have too much experience and know-how to beata woman ranked 146 places below her in the world, especially as she is playing on home soil, and in a tournament where she has enjoyed doubles success in the past.

Tip: Friedsam to win: 3/16 (bet365)
