Sinner Hoping to Translate Form to Clay

Sinner had featured in his first clay court tournament of the season at the Monte-Carlo Masters last week and came through his opening round match against Albert Ramos Vinolas with ease. However, against Novak Djokovic, the world number one and a player who has tipped Sinner to go on to achieve greater things in the future, the Italian came a cropper.

The world number 19 fell in straight sets to the Serb to crash out of the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Last year, following a slow start on clay, Sinner had gone on to excel at the French Open where he made it to the quarterfinal – that has been his best performance in a Grand Slam till date, having never made it past the second round before that.

His improvement on dirt can be seen from the fact Sinner was playing in Futures competitions on clay in 2018-19, won a Challenger round in 2019 and topped it with a main draw win at the Budapest Open that very year.

And in 2020, he had already reached the last eight stage in Roland-Garros with wins over David Goffin and Alexander Zverev.

Gerasimov Sends Tsonga Packing

The 77th-ranked Gerasimov spent an hour and 21 minutes getting Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round here, winning in straight sets. He was tested in the first set as Gerasimov lost his serve in the very first game but once he started to get a grip on the situation, the Belarusian turned it around for himself.

Gerasimov broke back in the eighth game to level the proceedings and then again when Tsonga served to stay in the first set at 5-6. He saved a game-point and converted the first set-point he got to take the lead.

The second set was a lot easier for Gerasimov as he broke first up in the second game and then again in the sixth as the rusty Tsonga faded away to a 5-7, 1-6, loss. Against Sinner, however, Gerasimov won’t have it this easy.

Sinner v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Sinner is 1/7 to win this and 2/5 to do that in straight sets and we think this should be an easy one for the Italian. Can he win a -5.5 games handicap? We think that’s very likely given Sinner’s excellent form in recent times.

Tip: Games Handicap Sinner -5.5: 11/10 (bet365)
