Karen Khachanov v Cameron Norrie Head to Head

Their only previous meeting had come in the Rotterdam Open from earlier this year where Khachanov won in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals.

Khachanov Falls in Second Round of Monte-Carlo

In what was his first tournament on clay this season, Khachanov looked to have done well to get past Laslo Djere in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Masters. That, however, is where his campaign ended as he fell to a straight-set defeat in the second round at the hands of Pablo Carren0-Busta in the second round.

Khachanov had earlier started off well in the season with a semifinal appearance at the Great Ocean Road Open and a third round entry into the Australian Open but then had started to struggle to push deeper into tournaments.

In fact, he enters the Barcelona Open with a 3-3 win-loss record over the past six matches.

The four-time ATP title winner has never won one on clay but has dished out decent performances at the French Open over the past three seasons. A quarterfinalist at the 2019 Roland Garros, he made it as far as the fourth round at both, the 2018 and 2020 edition with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev finally stalling his run.

Norrie Stuns Salvatore

For a player whose record on clay is nothing short of underwhelming, Norrie’s first round win over Salvatore Caruso was a surprise alright. And it wasn’t just a win but a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing that showed how much Norrie had matured on a surface where he had won just 10 career matches before this.

Caruso, who had gone into the match as a bookmakers’ favourite to win it, failed to last even an hour against his British opponent. Norrie broke Salvatore twice apiece in both the sets, while himself saving both the break-points he faced to come through.

This follows an otherwise solid season for the Brit who has reached the third round at both, the Australian Open and the Miami Masters and was a semifinalist at the Delray Beach Open.

Can he now continue this run on clay and against a tougher opponent?

Khachanov v Norrie Prediction and Tip

Khachanov is 3/10 to win this but Norrie’s opening showing points to a much-improved player and one who could surprise a few here. Backing the Brit to win a set here.

Tip: Norrie to win a set – Yes: 10/11 (bet365)
