Rublev Continues to Shine on Clay

Rublev’s form since the start of 2020 has continued unabated, regardless of the surface. He has pocketed six titles in the process including one this year and one of them on clay as well.

Such has been his run that it looks like a matter of time before he wins a Grand Slam as well, having come close to winning his maiden Masters victory last week. That the runner-up trophy came on clay underlines how much has he grown as an all-round tennis player.

What made that performance at the Monte-Carlo Masters doubly special was his wins over Roberto Bautista-Agut, Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud in the lead-up to the final.

Not too many players can lay a clay to have gotten past Nadal on dirt and for Rublev to have done it on the back of his excellent form is a huge tick on his performances.

He will now hope to continue that very form into Barcelona – one of the very few players who played at Monte-Carlo and are playing here – as he starts off against a lucky loser.

Gaio Has No Problem against Paire

Benoit Paire’s cup of woes continues to overflow as Gaio sent out the former world 18 in straight sets to set up this meeting with Rublev. Gaio endured eight aces and two breaks of serve but needed only an hour and 18 minutes to get past Paire.

Gaio had earlier lost in the first round of the Cagliari Open and made it only through to the second round at the Belgrade Challenger. He had lost in the second qualifying round here in Barcelona to Ilya Ivashka but made it through as a lucky loser.

The Italian player has never made it past the first round of any Grand Slam tournaments and while he has eight ITF title wins on clay to go with eight others at which he finished runner-up, Gaio will need much more than a miracle to get past his second round opponent.

Rublev v Gaio Prediction and Tip

Rublev is 1/25 to win this and 1/6 to do that in straight sets, and that’s exactly how we think this match will be headed – Rublev to not drop too many games in this.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 1/6 (bet365)
