Corentin Moutet v Dan Evans Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the second round of the US Open last year, with Moutet winning in four sets.

Moutet First Entry in Main Draw since Melbourne

Moutet has played little tennis in 2021. He began in Australia where he reached the semi-final of the same Murray River event that Evans won, and then got to the second round in the Australian Open itself, losing to Milos Raonic.

He did not reappear in a competitive match until he failed to qualify for Monte Carlo last week.

However, he got off to a winning start in Barcelona with an encouraging win over the world 54, Dominik Koepfer of Germany.

Moutet began badly, dropping his openings service game but was soon back on level terms and had a set point which the German saved. However, he got four more opportunities in Kuepfer’s next service game, and finally converted the fourth of those to take the set.

A sequence of three dropped service games in succession saw him edge ahead in the second, and he secured the win when Koepfer, serving to stay in the match, was broken once more.

Can Evans Maintain his Newfound Form on Clay?

Famously, before last week, Evans had not won a match on clay for over four years.

Yet, in the course of four days, he racked up four successive victories on the surface, with his victims including the Miami winner Hubert Hurkasz.

Then he pulled off a major shock by beating the world number one Novak Djokovic for the first time, defeating the Serb in straight sets. And he followed that up by defeating David Goffin in three sets to reach the semi-finals in Monte Carlo.

His run may have been then ended by the eventual winner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, but it was the latest achievement in what has already been a good year for the 30-year-old.

He won his first senior ATP title at Murray River Open Melbourne warm-up event.

Evans received a bye in the first round in Barcelona.

Moutet v Evans Prediction and Tip

Although Moutet won their previous encounter Evans is tipped to continue his unexpected spell of success on clay.

Tip: Evans to win: 7/11 (bet365)
