Felix Auger-Aliassime v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

This will be the first match between Auger-Aliassime and Musetti.

Auger-Aliassime Hoping to Overcome Clay Court Slump

He is a two-time finalist in clay court tournaments, but Auger-Aliassime’s more recent form on clay has left a lot to desire.

In 2020, for instance, Auger-Aliassime featured in three tournaments on dirt, and lost three of the four matches he played in. His best performance? A second appearance at the Hamburg Open sandwiching opening round defeats in Rome and Paris.

This year, things have begun in a similar fashion with Auger-Aliassime having lost in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Masters too. Now, to be fair to the Canadian, he was drawn to face Cristian Garin in his opener, and his Chilean opponent is not just a world number 22 but also a clay-court specialist who has won five ATP titles on dirt.

That said, Auger-Aliassime will need to improve his game on clay drastically to take on clay-courters like Garin or the one he is going to face in the opening round here, because otherwise, the chances of going deep into a tournament like this or the French Open sound bleak.

Musetti Makes Short Work of Lopez

It was never going to be an even contest but the manner in which Musetti got past the Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez should give him oodles of confidence. Musetti needed only an hour and 10 minutes to carve out a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lopez and book his second round spot.

Musetti made a slow start to the opening set and went down a break in the fifth game. That, however, was also where the match turned as Musetti broke back soon after and as Lopez served to stay in the first set, he delivered a second break to clinch the opening set.

A break-point was saved in the very first game of the second set by Musetti, but after that he was rarely troubled on his serve, as he dropped just one point on serve in the entire set.

A break to love in the eighth game of the second set paved way for the victory.

With a Challenger title and two Futures tournament wins under his belt, and all of them on clay, the 19-year-old Musetti has already captured the imagination of fans in his short career. Can he now stun a top-20 player here?

Auger-Aliassime v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose from between these two players with Auger-Aliassime at 4/5 to win this while Musetti starting out at 1/1. A fighting three-setter looks likely.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (bet365)
