The Belarusian had come into the clay court season with a solid win at the Abu Dhabi Open but a general tapering off of form as she failed to make it beyond the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
And with clay not been her most preferred surface anyway, there were always question-marks around the switch she was going to make between the two surfaces; hard court to clay.
Shuai Zhang. however, has herself been in some sort of a tennis strife and Sabalenka took full toll of that. In a little over an hour, Sabalenka destroyed her Chinese opponent, winning 6-2, 6-2 to seal her second round berth.
Sabalenka won 25 of her 29 points on her first serve, and faced just two break-points in the entire match – both of which were easily saved. In turn she broke Zhang four times to grab the match and cruise forward. Given what she has done in her first match on clay after the switch from hard court surfaces, she should have no issues with rhythm coming into this one.

Friedsam Untroubled by Eikeri
Having qualified for the main draw of this competition with back to back wins, Ulikke Eikeri could have been a bit of a thorn in her opponent’s flesh but Friedsam had no difficulties getting past her Norwegian opponent. The 125th-ranked Friedsam won 6-2, 6-0 to carve out an easy win and move to the second round.
In doing so, Friedsam won her first main draw match on the WTA circuit since her first round victory at the US Open last season. In turn it was also her first win on clay since the 2019 Palermo Open where she had reached the quarterfinal.
Friedsam had earlier kick-started her clay court season with a first round loss at the Bogota Open, going down to Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. Can she use the confidence from her opening win here to make life difficult for Sabalenka in this second round match?
