Marta Kostyuk v Ana Konjuh Head to Head
Kostyuk and Konjuh have never faced each other in the past on the WTA tour and it will be their first meeting on the women’s circuit.
Kostyuk Upsets Kasatkina in Round 2
Kostyuk, who has compiled a decent 7-4 win/loss record in 2021, stunned Daria Kasatkina of Russia in what was a shotmaking thriller in the second round of the tournament in Istanbul.
In fact, such was her brilliance during the match that she was able to dominate the proceedings from the outset, eventually winning the contest 6-3, 6-4 to book her place in the quarterfinals.
The Ukrainian was equally impressive in the first round, overcoming Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova in comfortable fashion on Tuesday. Indeed, Kostyuk’s aggressive style of play, coupled with her ability to strike clean winners from the baseline, has helped her in earning back-to-back wins in Turkey.
There’s no doubt about the fact that Kostyuk has made rapid strides on the WTA tour this season. After all, she made it through to the final of the tournament in Abu Dhabi, but lost to the supremely talented Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in straight sets.
Even though, she faced a string of poor results in the subsequent events, Kostyuk could very well make a deep run in Istanbul, considering that her confidence is high at the moment.
Konjuh 11-6 This Season
Kostyuk’s challenger for a place in the semifinals is Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, an excellent mover on the clay courts. Certainly, her quick reflexes and her precision oriented groundstrokes powered her to a brilliant 7-5, 6-2 win over former French Open finalist Sara Errani in Round 1 and China’s Qiang Wang in the round of 16.
Before her arrival in Istanbul, Konjuh had a superb tournament in Miami, where she won three matches in a row to reach the fourth round. However, she couldn’t find a way to beat Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, who defeated her in two sets.
But, her run in Miami would have given her the belief that she can confront the very best players in the world with her game and that’s what she is looking to achieve in the ongoing tournament.
Kostyuk v Konjuh Prediction and Tip
In this contest between unheralded players, Kostyuk would have the edge over Konjuh as she has far more experience than the 23-year-old Croatian. Moreover, Konjuh’s solid win in Round 2 would have made her believe that she can make a deep run in the event.
Tip: Kostyuk to win in straight sets: 5/4 (bet365)
