Elise Mertens v Katerina Siniakova Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two players and all of them have been won by Mertens. Interestingly, all of those three matches came on hard court surfaces, in the first round and in tournaments played in 2019.

Can Siniakova turn it around on clay?

Mertens Stretched By In-Form Golubic

While Mertens has been the form player through the last 10 months or so, Viktorija Golubic had done well on clay in recent times and was expected to stretch the world number 17. That’s exactly what she did in the second round of this competition, before Mertens came through in three sets.

Mertens, who had earlier crushed Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino in the opening round of the competition 6-2, 6-0, dropped a set before winning in two hours and 18 minutes to seal her quarterfinal berth.

She won 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, overturning a 0-3 deficit in the first set to level things off at 4-4. In the ninth game, Mertens overturned a game-point to achieve a decisive break before serving out for the set.

Things seemed to be headed to tie-breaker in the second set when neither player dropped their serves in the first nine games of the set but a strange serving game from Mertens saw her opponent break her to love and level the match.

Mertens wrested back the control with four games in a row in the third set, and then broke one final time in the seventh game to complete the victory.

Siniakova Turning Things Around

Siniakova had entered this tournament on the back of just two wins all season, having lost six matches to go with it. A change to clay court surfaces seems to have brought a change in her fortunes too with Siniakova winning both her first two rounds here.

In the first, Siniakova needed three sets against Cristina Bucsa to advance before taking down Kristina Mladenovic in the second round 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Mertens.

The Czech, whose last appearance at this tournament came in 2019 and resulted in a first round defeat, needed two hours and 25 minutes in a gruelling encounter before coming through. Interestingly, there were a total of 14 breaks of serve, seven for each player, in the match, but it was the crucial ones in the final set that tiled the match in favour of Siniakova.

Can the world number 69 now build on this and surprise Mertens?

Mertens v Siniakova Prediction and Tip

An easy, straight set win is in the offing for Mertens and there seems to be very little that Siniakova will be able to do.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 3/5 (bet365)
