There have been seven matches played between Barty and Svitolina before this. Svitolina has won five of these seven between 2017 and 2019 till it was at the 2019 WYA Finals that Barty finally managed to stall the Pliskova flow.

Barty Bounces Back from Set Down

Karolina Pliskova’s woeful recent form meant Barty was an overwhelming favourite to win her quarterfinal here but when she fell behind a set, it looked like things could have gone either way.

The set had gone to serve till 3-2 when Pliskova broke Barty against the run of play and then made it two in a row to clinch the opening set.

Barty bounced back to break in the very first game of the second and then consolidated the break with one in the fifth game and levelled the match with another break of serve in the next game.

It was the third set that proved to be the most keenly-fought of the match though. Pliskova forged ahead to take a 3-1 lead after getting a break and then saving three break-points but Barty showed her mettle as the Czech served for the match at 5-4.

In a long next game, she prevented Pliskova from getting even one match-point even as Barty herself got five break-points – converting it off the fifth. A hold to love followed and a now-confident Barty broke Pliskova yet again to complete the stunning win.

Barty, who had a first round bye, had earlier begun her campaign with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Laura Siegemund.

Svitolina Shocks Kvitova in Fighting Three-Setter

It’s been a tough couple of rounds for Svitolina so far but the kind of matches that would prepare her well for the world number one in this upcoming semifinal.

Svitolina, who had earlier registered a straight-set win over Angelie Keber, a former Grand Slam winner, defeated the veteran and another winner of major titles Petra Kvitova in a gruelling three-setter.

In a match lasting two hours and 38 minutes, Svitolina lost the early initiative when Kvitova broke her back and then the Czech failed to serve out for the set before completing a win in the tie-breaker.

It was her fightback in the second set that would stay close to her heart. Down a set and 4-1 in the second, Svitolina summoned up all her courage to break Kvitova twice to run away with the third and final set.
