This will be the first meeting between Anderson and Carballes Baena.

Carballes Baena Replaces Nishikori

Carballes Baena fell in the second round of qualifying to Nuno Borges but still made it through to the second round of the competition following the withdrawal of Kei Nishikori. Nishikori had been drawn to take on Anderson but a right abductor injury forced the Japanese player to pull out of the competition.

What that means is Carballes Baena, who has won just three main draw matches on clay this season, gets a chance to get past a player who hasn’t been playing a lot of tennis these days.

It has also been just over three years since Carballes Baena won his first and only ATP title and it had come on the clay courts of the Ecuador Open in 2018.

Clay being his favourite surface, Carballes Baena will now hope he can take advantage of this piece of fortune but such has been his own form, it looks to be a tough one.

Anderson Shocks Tiafoe

Having come into his opening round match at odds of 2/1, Anderson looked to have started well but once he missed out on a break-point chance and then having lost his own serve and by extension the opening set, the South African was staring at the wrong end of the barrel.

Tiafoe broke Anderson yet again to take a 4-2 lead in the second set, and then served for the match at 5-4 soon after before Anderson made a comeback. He broke back, forced a tie-breaker and then complete the match-equalling set win.

Broken again in the fourth game of the final set, Anderson broke back twice, missed out on the opportunity to serve for the match but then converted his first match-point in the tie-breaker to make it to round two.

This fighting performance having come into a tournament on a surface he doesn’t prefer playing after having a 2-3 win-loss record all season would be a huge boost to Anderson’s confidence.

Roberto Carballes Baena v Anderson Prediction and Tip

Anderson starts off a favourite but on clay the match-up events out drastically and we could see a fighting three-setter between these two.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
