Magda Linette v Zheng Saisai Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 29-year-old Pole, and her Chinese opponent, who is two years younger.

Linette Eclipsed by Swiatek

Until the French Open last year, Linette was not only the most successful current female player than Poland had produced, but also the best known. All that changed when Iga Swiatek burst on to the scene and won the title in Paris, and, since then, Linette has been in her shadows.

It has not helped that she missed most of the first three months of the season, only making her belated first appearance of the season at the Miami Open, where she got to the second round before losing to Johanna Konta in straight sets.

Staying in America, Linette contested both the events in Charleston. But suffered the same fate each time, a first round defeat. The first loss was at the hands of the American Amanda Anisimova, and then she was beaten by Maria Camila Osario-Sorrana.

She has not played since.

Saisai Back in Europe After Spell in Americas

Saisai, like many Chinese players, did not appear on tour in 2020 after lockdown.

Determined to make up for lost time she began the year in terrible form and lost her first six matches, most of them in straight sets.

A switch to the Americas brought better fortune and she reached the third round in Monterrey, and then the second round in Miami.

The last event she contested was in Bogota, here first clay tournament of the year. There she got to the second round again, before suffering defeat at the hands of the Swiss player, Stefanie Voegele.

Saisai’s prowess on clay can be judged by her record in the French Open, where she has never got beyond the first round in seven attempts.

Linette v Saisai Prediction and Tip

Neither woman is in good form coming into this match, but Linette will begin the favourite on the strength of her superior world ranking, and preference for European conditions.

Tip: Linette to win: 4/5 (bet365)
