Pavlyuchenkova Struggling to Find Past Form

Pavlyuchenkova has been in 20 WTA career finals, and, although she is better known as a hard court player, she has enjoyed a fair degree of success on clay.

Three of her career wins have come on the surface, whilst she won the doubles title in Madrid back in 2013, with partner Lucia Safafova. That was the same year that she reached the quarter-finals of the French Open, but she has not been in that sort of form for a number of years.

There has been little sign that Pavlyuchenkova is ready to get back to those levels any time soon in 2021, and she after losing in her first  match in the Australian Open, she has not gone beyond the second round in any event she entered.

Her first appearance on clay this year came in Istanbul, but her participation was ended early, beaten by compatriot Anastasia Potapova, in three sets.

Keys has been in clay courts finals before, winning the Charleston Open in 2019, and finishing runner-up in the same event four years earlier, and in Rome in 2016. And she has also reached both the semi-finals and the last eight at the French Open.

The 26-year old American though is not currently in that type of form, although she has not played much tennis so far since tennis resumed after lockdown, claiming she had lost some enjoyment of the sport. Keys chose to mis the Australian Open rather than undergo the mandatory spell in quarantine.

She returned to the tour in the Middle east, suffering successive second round defeats in Doha and Dubai.

Back on home soil, Keys was beaten in the first round of Miami by the Croatian Ana Konjuh, the world 205.

And Keys could not enjoy past glories in Charleston either, suffering another first-round defeat, this time at the hands of compatriot Sloane Stephens.
