Petra Kvitova v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

Other than the two times that these players faced off in a Fed Cup match, there have been 11 meetings between Kvitova and Kerber. Kerber leads 6-5 with Kvitova having won the other two matches in the Fed Cup.

Kerber is 3-1 on clay though having won as recently as the Stuttgart Open of 2018. Incidentally they haven’t played since the 2019 Sydney International of 2019.

Kvitova Benefits from Bouzkova Withdrawal

It wasn’t the most straightforward of wins for Kvitova despite Marie Bouzkova’s withdrawal from their opening round match.

In fact, despite the retirement because of injury, Bouzkova managed to keep Kvitova on court for an hour and 10 minutes before the world number 12 came through and set up this second round meeting with Angelique Kerber.

It started with an early break for Kvitova before Bouzkova levelled things out in the very next game. Kvitova then broke twice before serving it out at 5-2 to clinch the opening set.

The second set saw Bouzkova retaliate with a break in the second game but a long service game that saw Kvitova waste three break-points before clinching it off the fourth was the last time the world number 56 was found on court. She retired soon after to award her fellow Czech a walkover.

Kvitova, who has had a couple of middling performances on clay this season with a second round appearance at Charleston and quarterfinals in Stuttgart, will now have a slightly trickier opponent in the form of the former world number one.

Kerber Tames Vondrousova

She was 2/1 coming into her opening round match against Marketa Vondrousova, the 2019 French Open runnerup but Kerber managed to find a way to make it through in straight sets.

And the going wasn’t the easiest in the first set for the German, who dropped her serve in her very first service game. Kerber bounced back to bring the match back on level pegging the very next game after missing out on three break-points and with no other break-points for either player throughout the set, it was pushed into a tie-breaker.

Things went neck in neck as neither managed a two-point lead till it read 5-5 before Kerber broke the Vondrousova serve at 6-5 to clinch the opener.

The second set turned far more straightforward when Kerber broke Vondrousova twice, in the second and fourth game, and romped to a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win in an hour and 20 minutes.

Now comes one of her biggest challenges of recent times.

Kvitova v Kerber Prediction and Tip

It’s not much of a surprise that Kvitova is a favourite but for her to start 1/4 despite her own form and against a player who has just beaten someone like Marketa Vondrousova gives us a chance.

Tip: Games Handicap Kerber +4.5: 11/10 (bet365)
