Matteo Berrettini v Casper Ruud Head to Head

They have played each other on three previous occasions and Ruud has won two of those encounters. Two of those three matches came on clay and Ruud won both – at the 2019 French Open and 2020 Italian Open.

Berrettini’s only victory over Ruud came at the 2020 US Open.

Ruud Makes it Three Semifinals in a Row

2020 proved to be a turnaround of sorts for Ruud when he won his maiden ATP title but it was also the year in which he made it to the semifinal of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

It came at the Italian Open that year and since then he has entered the semifinals of successive clay court Masters competitions, with a win over Alexander Bublik helping him to a third in a row – he was a semifinalist in Monte-Carlo last month too.

Making it special was the ease of his win in the quarterfinal. Ruud was stretched in the first set by Alexander Bublik, sure, but once he got his rhythm back there was no looking back.

In a match lasting an hour and nine minute, Ruud registered a 7-5, 6-1 win with three breaks of serve in the entire match. In contrast, the Norwegian faced just one break-point in the encounter and saved it easily to shut out Bublik from the encounter.

Berrettini Makes Comeback Win

A set down and a break down in the second. That’s how bad things had got for Berrettini in his quarterfinal against Chile’s Cristian Garin before he mounted a stunning comeback that should make the world sit up and take notice.

Or at least make Ruud do that.

Because Berrettini was 5-7, 1-3 down when he won 11 successive games from that point on to clinch the place in semifinal. What was even more startling was it wasn’t like Garin didn’t offer a fight and just caved in.

After losing the second set, the Chilean player had two break-points in the second game to break and level the score but failed to do that. And once that happened and Berrettini broke for the second time, the wind seemed to have come off Garin’s sails.

Berrettini had earlier defeated Fabio Fognini and Federico Delbonis in his first two rounds here and is now on a seven-match winning streak that includes a title in Belgrade.

Can he now make it eight in a row?

Berrettini v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Ruud’s form on clay makes him an irresistible pick to make his first Masters 1000 final but Berrettini has shown he knows to stay in the match. And that will count for a lot and end up helping him take the match to a third.
