Sara Sorribes Tormo v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

There has only been one previous encounter between these two player and that came in the 2020 Linz Open. It was Giorgi who won that indoor court competition meeting in three sets.

Sorribes Tormo at Career-Best Despite Poor Clay Start

Three back to back performances to remember from Sorribes Tormo catapulted her from a season low of 71st to a career-best of 46th in the rankings. This included a title win in Guadalajara, a semifinal in Monterrey and a quarterfinal in the WTA 1000 competition in Miami.

Unfortunately for Sorribes Tormo, she has been unable to replicate that showing on clay so far this season.

The Spaniard was 1/5 favourite in her opener at the Bogota Open against Sara Errani but lost in straight sets. And then, she had the misfortune of facing Simona Halep in the very first round at Madrid and won just five games in the match.

Sorribes Tormo has had a decent record on clay though. In fact, that’s where she made her name at the ITF circuit, winning 11 of her 12 titles there on dirt. Can she now turn things around and register her first win of the season on clay and in Rome?

Giorgi Begins Clay Campaign

Italy’s Giorgi has not had a great start to the season but more vitally she has played in just four tournaments so far. That has given her four wins and an equal number of defeats and as a result of that, her ranking has also dropped to 81st in the world.

What’s interesting to note is since the start of the 2019 season, Giorgi has the same 4-4 win-loss record on clay too – all of those matches coming in 2020. A semifinal in this country in Italy, at the Palermo Open, was followed by a second round in Prague and then saw her fall in the openers of the Italian Open and French Open after that.

She starts without a lot of tennis behind her back, and not having played since the last week of March. Can she shrug that rustiness off?

A victory here will help her emulate her best result at Rome but up against her is a player who knows her way around this surface a bit.

Sorribes Tormo v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Despite being 0-2 on clay this season, Sorribes Tormo is 1/3 to win this and 5/6 to do that in straight sets. Backing the Spaniard to run away with the match.
