Karatsev Consistent on Clay

There is just no limit to what Aslan Karatsev can achieve or how many more milestones he will crack as the final major stop before the main event in Paris kicks off.

Karatsev has a solid 19-6 record for the current campaign which is showing no signs of slowing down despite playing in seven tournaments. Of his six defeats, four have come against top 10 opposition which underlines his credentials as a serial winner.

In the ATP Race to Turin, which measures ranking points attained during the course of 2021, he sits comfortably in fifth place. On this note, the Russian is playing better tennis than what his ranking suggests.

His form on clay has been another highlight of this terrific year. Victory over Novak Djokovic in the semifnals of Belgrade is the cherry on top of this breakthrough season. As the tennis fraternity continues to pose the question week in, week out, for how long this will last, maybe we ought to

Kecmanovic Beaten in Madrid Opener

As Karatsev continues to impress, Miomir Kecmanovic has been playing with the handbrake on. The Serbian, touted as one of the fututre stars in the game, is 9-10 for the season.

Kecmanovic’s defeat to John Isner at the Madrid Masters was the second straight defeat in the first round of a Masters 1000 tournament on clay. In Monte Carlo he was beaten by Fognini, and the omen is that the pattern could continue in Rome.

But clay still remains his forte as evident with a semifinal run in Buenos Aires, and the quarterfinal in Belgrade. He is still looking to make up 10 places in the rankings to match his career-high of No. 38.

For a career that promised so much, and which could still yield so much, there is a need to refine his game to stay competitive at the top level.

This will be the 21-year-old’s second main draw appearance in Rome. He was beaten by Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round at last year’s edition.
