Cameron Norrie v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the previous year’s US Open where Fokina defeated Norrie in four sets to move into the fourth round, the only time so far the Spaniard has made it that far at a Grand Slam.

Norrie Continues to Fire on Clay

Including his wins in the qualifiers, Norrie has won 10 and lost only two matches on clay this season which is a marked improvement in his results on this surface.

And this win includes a straight-set win over Roberto Carballes Baena in his opening round match here in Rome, with the Brit winning 6-4, 6-4. The match lasted an hour and 42.

Interestingly, neither player looked confident on their serves as Norrie broke twice to take a 5-1 lead only to lose his serve on two successive occasions to concede it in a hurry. But just when one thought Carballes Baena had got back into his groove, he dropped serve yet again to award Norrie the set.

The second set followed a similar pattern as Norrie broke first in the eighth game but missed out a chance to serve out the match when he was broken the very next game. However, Norrie then broke Carballes Baena again to pocket the match, continuing on from his quarterfinal appearance in Barcelona and a runnerup trophy in Estoril.

Qualifier Fokina Yet to Drop a Set

Defeating two qualifiers without dropping a set, Fokina demolished Grigor Dimitrov in his first round encounter in straight sets to set up this meeting with Norrie. The Spanish qualifier won 6-4, 7-6 (2) to seal his place in the second round.

In a match lasting an hour and 44 minutes, Fokina broke Dimitrov once apiece in the first and second set to win the contest.

This followed Fokina’s earlier solid form on clay with the Spaniard having fallen one win short of entering the final at Estoril where he would have faced Norrie.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, Fokina had registered straight-set wins over Alex De Minaur, Matteo Berrettini and Lucas Pouille to make the quarterfinals while going down fighting to Daniil Medvedev in Madrid last week.

Can he now get past the Brit ranked one place behind him?

Norrie v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip
