Martic Snaps Losing Sequence

Martic came into Rome off the back of a long losing sequence that stretched all the way back to when she played in the Adelaide Open in February.

But she snapped that losing run with a very hard fought win over the American Shelby Rogers, the world 43, on Monday.

Martic began well, breaking the American in her opening service game. But she could not hold on to her lead and Rogers soon levelled, and then broke her again to take the opening set.

The second set was dominated by serve until the eighth game when Martic broke the America. Rogers had three break back points next game, but could not convert any of them, and the Croat was able to level the match.

The third set could have gone either way, because Martic four times had to save break points on her own serve. However, save them she did and that proved decisive when she got her own chance to break Rogers, as she succeeded where the American had failed.

The win was secured with her second match point.

Lucky Loser Mladenovic Shocks Bencic

Mladenovic was made to qualify in Rome, and having defeated the Swiss player Leonie Kung, was well beaten by Vera Zvonareva of Russia, the world 113.

However, she was given a last minute reprieve and entered the main draw as a  lucky loser, earning her a tie against the world number eleven, and number ten seed, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

Mladenovic had to save a break point in her opening service game, but she was the first to strike, breaking Bencic once, and then repeating the trick, two games later.

The Swiss player got one of he breaks back, saved a set point, but could not prevent Mladenovic claiming the set in her next service game.

And it was Mladenovic who struck an early blow in the second set, converting her fourth break point to establish the lead.

Bencic hit back to level, but, before she could draw breath, was broken to love again. Mladenovic served out for the match from there.
