Veronika Kudermetova v Caroline Garcia Head to Head
Kudermetova and Garcia have never played each other before this in a competitive WTA match.
Kudermetova Causes an Upset in Opener
On paper it was an upset. After all, Kudermetova is ranked 28th to her opponent Elise Mertens’ 14th, and it wasn’t even like the latter had been out of form.
However, Kudermetova has shown all season she has had an extra gear in her game and taking on a player who was coming off an injury from last week would have given her, her best chance.
And the Russian grabbed it with both hands as Mertens let slip a one set lead and lose it in three. Kudermetova won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes to make it to the second round of this competition for the very first time.
It was Kudermetova who took the early lead with a break of serve but Mertens seemed to be getting back into rhythm with a break back and then another break of serve in the seventh game.
Things took a turn in the second set, however, when Kudermetova broke in the sixth game before closing it out in the eighth with a second break of the set. An exchange of breaks in the third took them to 3-3, but Kudermetova then clinched the encounter when she got herself a surprise break in the eighth game of the final set and then closed out the match in the ninth.
This was Kudermetova’s 12th win on clay to her two defeats.
Garcia Begins Clay with a Win
Since her second round loss at the Miami Open earlier this year, Garcia had been out of action from the game and the worry always was whether she would be able to shrug off her rustiness to get back to her winning ways.
As it turned out, Garcia was left with 111th-ranked Elisabetta Cocciaretto as her first round opponent and while the Frenchwoman was scratchy to start things off, she came through in straight sets.
Garcia won 7-6 (8), 6-2 to claim her second round berth in a competition where she has made the quarterfinal in 2018. It hasn’t otherwise been the best of seasons for Garcia, however, having won and lost seven matches apiece in the lead-up to this tournament.
Kudermetova v Garcia Prediction and Tip
Kudermetova should not have too many difficulties in this second round match against a player returning to tennis after bit of a break and playing in her first clay court competition of the season. A straight-set win looks likely.
