Barty Ends Kudermetova’s Party

Given Veronika Kudermetova’s form right throughout this season on clay, we expected her to provide somewhat of a challenge to Barty. Instead Barty stormed her way into the quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over her Russian opponent and set up her first meeting with Gauff.

In a match lasting an hour and 18 minutes, Barty was in trouble just once in the match and that came in the first game of the opening set when Kudermetova broke her serve. Leading 2-0 in the opening set, Kudermetova looked to have given an indication why her win-loss was 13-2 this season.

That, however, is when Barty stormed back into the contest and ended the Kudermetova resistance.

A break of serve in the fourth game was followed by another in the sixth when Barty got four chances to do so. And while she frittered away three set-points on Kudermetova’s serve, Barty finished it off with an easy hold next game.

The second set was an easier one for Barty who broke in the third game, didn’t face a single break-point and then broke yet again when Kudermetova served to stay in the match.

Barty had earlier gotten past Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets following a first round bye.

Gauff Stuns Sabalenka

Not too many would have given Gauff too much of a chance against Aryna Sabalenka, let alone for the American to win it in straight sets.

But in an hour and 30 minutes, Gauff came away a 7-5, 6-3 winner over the Madrid Open champion and in-form Sabalenka to make it to the second WTA 1000 quarterfinals of her career.

A break of serve for Gauff in the very first game of the opening set showed she was going to be a part but when she held her serve the next three games despite facing break-points in two of them showed she meant business.

Sabalenka did manage to break back to level out at 4-4 but instead of withering away, Gauff used the one break-point she got in the 11th game to go 6-5 up and then served to love to win the opening set.

And when the world number 35 continued to hold her serve in the second set with aplomb, Sabalenka knew she had her back to the wall. Gauff refused to give an inch, broke her opponent in the seventh game and then again in the ninth game to finish off the encounter.

Earlier Gauff had gotten the better of Yulia Putintseva in round one and stunned Maria Sakkari in the second. The Sabalenka win is already the best of her career but the question now is whether she can overpower the world number one.

Barty v Gauff Prediction and Tip

While Barty is a heavy favourite here, the lack of matches between these two players mean there is a sense of the unknown. And that might suit Gauff more than Barty. Gauff also has a tendency to do well with momentum behind her back and that’s why one can expect her to take a set off the world number one here.
