Sara Sorribes Tormo v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

Both of their previous two meetings have come this season and both have been played on hard court surfaces. Sorribes Tormo was stretched to three sets in both those matches but won them and leads 2-0. The matches were played in Abu Dhabi and Miami.

Sorribes Tormo Unable to Replicate Hard Court Form

This is the season in which Sorribes Tormo broke into the top 50 of the rankings for the first time in her career. That was thanks to her stunning showing on hard court surfaces where she won 15 of the 20 matches she played.

In fact, coming into the clay court swing, the Spaniard exhibited the form of her life as she first lifted a maiden WTA title in Guadalajara, reached the semifinal in Monterrey and then shocked Jennifer Brady, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur to march into the quarterfinal in Miami.

The switch to clay hasn’t worked too well for Sorribes Tormo though.

She was sent packing in her very first match by Sara Errani, losing in straight sets at Bogota, then had the misfortune of drawing Simona Halep in her very first round at Madrid and with her confidence lowered again, Sorribes Tormo just about managed to defeat Camila Giorgi and lost in the second round at Rome.

Can she turn things around here?

Pera Hoping to Make it Three in a Row

After starting things out on a tepid note on clay this season with back to back defeats in Charleston and Istanbul, Pera has shown signs of resurrection.

Having to qualify for both the WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, Pera won her first round matches there too, shocking Petra Martic at the former and overcoming Tamara Zidansek at the latter.

And while she lost in the second round, a string of wins like these should help her no ends, especially on a surface she made the semifinals of two events in 2019 – at Lausanne and Jurmala.

Up against her is a player who has been slightly shaky on clay this season and Pera will hope to take advantage of this and make it to the second round, third time in a row.

Sorribes Tormo v Pera Prediction and Tip
