Camila Giorgi v Christine McHale Head to Head
The pair have met four times before, and their head to head record is two wins apiece.
McHale won their first two matches – in Sydney and at the Rome Masters – in 2014, but the two matches the following year both went to the Italian. Giorgi winning ion the grass of Eastbourne and the hard courts of the Cincinnati Open.
Can Giorgi Make Home Advantage Count?
Giorgi has been in 8 WTA titles, winning two of them, the Rosmalen Open on grass in 2015, and the Linz Open three years later.
Unusually for an Italian player, clay is not here favourite surface. Instead, she prefers faster, harder courts, which suit her aggressive playing style.
Giorgi has not played much tennis since losing to Iga Swiatek in the second round of the Australian Open. She got to the third round in Lyon, an after suffering a first round defeat in Miami, missed the next six weeks before reappearing in Rome last week.
That did not go as planned though – she was beaten in the first round by the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, after a three set battle.
McHale in the Midst of a Slump
It has been nearly 9 years since McHale reached her highest single ranking of 24, and five since she won her solitary WTA title, the Japan Open.
These days she operates in the lower reaches of the top 100, which is enough to get her automatic qualification for the lesser events, but means she has to qualify for the more prestigious tournaments.
2021 has been a particularly disappointing year tor the 29 year old American so far.
Since losing in the first round of the Australian Open to the Argentine Nadia Podoroska, she has only won one singles match in the main draw of a WTA event and that was ion Charleston.
She was knocked out in the first round of a Challenger event in Saint Malo and, although she did manager to qualify fort Rome last week, suffered yet another first round defeat, taking just two games off Vera Zvonareva of Russia, a player ranked 23 places below her in the world.
Camila Giorgi v Christine McHale Prediction and Tip
Giorgi will start the clear favourite because she is playing in home conditions against an opponent who is in the middle of prolonged slump. Giorgi has not played much in 2021, but a win would be a good morale booster for her.
