Gael Monfils v Lloyd Harris Head to Head

Their only meeting was at the Chengdu Open in 2018 where Harris emerged victorious in a three-setter.

Monfils On Seven Match Opening Round Loss Streak

Gael Monfils won the ATP 500 at Rotterdam in February 2020 and seemed to be at one of the high points of his career when he had multiple match points against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Dubai ATP 500. However, he squandered the match points and it was has been downhill since.

Returning to the tour after the Covid-19 hiatus,  Monfils has yet to win a single match, losing in the first round of four tournaments before he ended the 2020 season and continuing the trend into 2021.  Starting Down Under this year, the Frenchman lost his openers  at both the ATP Cup and the Aussie Open. He was reduced to tears in the aftermath of his first-round defeat at the Australian Open, took a relationship hiatus and a break from tennis.

Returning to the tour after taking a break since, the Frenchman looked in better touch last week in Rome against Lorenzo Sonego but lost a three-setter against the young Italian, who went on to have his best tournament to date in his career.

Monfils who has been a semi-finalist at the French Open and ranked as high as number six in the world once, will be hoping to reverse the tide this week, ahead of his home slam.

After Solid Dubai Run, Harris Yet To Gain Momentum On Clay

Harris broke into the top 50 of the ATP rankings recently largely due to his performances on hard court tournaments earlier this year.

A third round at the Australian Open but more importantly, making the final of the ATP Dubai 2021 after starting out as a qualifier propelled him towards his career-best. The latter included wins against Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov before he fell to Aslan Karatsev.

Unfortunately for Harris, his performances on clay have not been much to write about. His overall clay court record reads an abysmal 2-8 with one of those wins coming this year in Madrid against Grigor Dimitrov. However, the season has seen early losses at Estoril, Rome and Madrid and he will be hoping to get momentum ahead of the second major of the year.

Monfils v Harris Prediction and Tip

Monfils has been on a losing streak dating back to his return on the tour after the pandemic hiatus in 2020. But, he looked like getting into some form against Lorenzo Sonego last week in the opener in Rome. Being the more experienced and accustomed better to the clay, Monfils may just turn around the tide here.

Expect the Frenchman to break the losing streak in a three-setter.
