Diego Schwartzman v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Gasquet leads their head to head 3-1. Schwartzman’s only win over his opponent came as recently as the Paris Masters of the previous season while Gasquet has defeated the Argentine the one time they played on clay – at the 2018 Monte-Carlo Masters.

Schwartzman 2-4 on Clay Since Buenos Aires

A clay court specialist who had defeated Rafael Nadal last season, Schwartzman looked to have begun from where he left off last year when he lifted the Buenos Aires Open title early in March this season.

Unfortunately for the Argentine, things have capitulated since then for him, with Schwatzman winning just two of the six matches he has played on clay after that title victory.

To be fair to Schwartzman, all of these losses have come to pedigreed players – none of those upsets at the hands of journeymen or have-beens. But even then, Schwartzman would have hoped to defeat at least one of Casper Ruud, Pablo Carreno-Busta, Aslan Karatsev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, opponents to whom he lost.

A semifinalist at the French Open last season, Schwartzman will need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to emulate that showing. And to be able to do that, a confidence-boosting performance here in Lyon could go a long way in helping him.

Gasquet Edges Past Barrère

In a seesawing battle between the two Frenchmen, Gasquet came through in three sets against Grégoire Barrère to carve out a place in the second round.

Gasquet had gone into his opening round match as a favourite but only just and when he was broken in the 11th game of the opening set by his opponent, the script looked to have gone a tad awry.

Barrère served it out to win the first set and then levelled things out in the ninth game of the second after losing his serve early. Gasquet retaliated with a break the very next game to claim the set and level the match.

In the third, Gasquet needed just the one break of serve which came in the sixth game, and he eased through to the win – facing not a single break-point in the set.

This win levelled things off at 4-4 for the season win-loss for Gasquet but coming up against Schwartzman he runs the risk of another loss.

Schwartzman v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman, despite his own form, should not face too much drama in getting past his French opponent. Straight set win even.
